Five Steps to Finding the Right Real Estate Agent

New HouseInvesting in new property? Then it’s important to make sure you have the right real estate agent working on your behalf. This is where it pays to put in the time to do a little research. You wouldn’t simply hire a professional based on a business card, so why settle on the first real estate realtors you meet? Making the right decision is all about weighing the benefits against the drawbacks. Follow these five steps to help you during your quest for the right real estate realtors.

Step 1: Go to plenty of open houses.

Real estate agents tend to benefit from open houses just as much as prospective buyers and sellers. That’s because open houses can be great lead-generation resources for them, which, for you, means a great chance of meeting an agent who can actually help you out. Even if you’re not interesting in buying a particular property, head to an open house and see if you can make contact with an agent. It always helps to keep your options open.

Step 2: Ask your friends for recommendations.

Though open houses can help, they also make it hard to gauge exactly who might fit your particular home buying or selling needs. Any commercial realtor will likely work hard to help you, but some are simply more experienced than others. Asking a friend or family member for their recommendations is a good way to meet trusted real estate realtors with plenty of practice in the industry.

Step 3: Shop around before you settle in.

Chances are, you won’t find a real estate agent you love without a little legwork. That’s fine, though, because it allows you the chance to vet the agent who will be able to get you the best deal on your new location. Shop around for real estate realtors and get quotes and rate ideas, then compare them against each other. Who do you think will work the hardest for you? When you think you have a solid answer, go for it.

Step 4: Remember to go mobile as much as you can.

Property shopping in the 21st century is easier than it’s ever been, and that’s thanks to advancements in technology. Make sure that when you find a realtor, you get his or her cell phone number and email address so you can be in contact with him or her whenever you need, not necessarily just during business hours. A lot of the face-to-face interaction will happen at the prospective sites, but your agent should be available when you’re on-the-go, too.

Step 5: Find out who the agent is working for.

This is probably the most essential component of the entire process. Typically, real estate realtors will be working for the seller, attempting to get him or her the most money back on their asking price. Get to know your agent. Find out whether or not he or she is a broker working with you or a sales agent attempting to negotiate a better deal for the seller(s). In some situations, however, real estate realtors do work for both — these instances are referred to as “dual agency.” At the end of the day, you have to feel good about your decision.
